Kara avalakki is very easy to prepare and can be stored for about couple of weeks to serve as a evening time snack, a perfect snack for travelling...
Ingredients:
- paper avalakki /beaten rice - 250 gms
- Ground nuts - 2 tbsp
- Salt - 2 tsp or according to taste
- Oil - 2 or 3 tbsp
- Sugar - 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves - 8-10
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Jeera - 1 tsp
- Turmericpowder - 1/4 tsp
- Hing (Asafoetida) - 1/4 tsp
- Dry Red chili -2-3 tsp
- Roasted gram - 2 tbsp
- Dried coconut - 1/2 cup, cut in thin strips
Method:
- Heat oil in a large kadai. When oil is hot, reduce heat and add the peanuts and fry till just done.
- Remove from oil and put on a plate.
- In the same oil, add the coconut pieces and fry on low heat till golden brown. Do not let it turn black. Remove from oil and put along with peanuts.
- Add the mustard and cumin seeds. When they stop spluttering, add asafetida powder and turmeric powder, curry leaves.
- Add the avalakki / beaten rice. Mix well. Keep the heat low.
- Keep stirring till the avalakki gets crisp. Add chili powder, salt, sugar, peanuts, coconut pieces and mix well.
- Taste it and add salt or chili powder if necessary.
- When the avalakki is almost crisp, remove from stove and cool completely. store in airtight container.
